GM yesterday confirmed a project that was long rumored to be in development: a fully electric Chevrolet Corvette sports car. The Corvette EV, whatever it might be called, will be preceded by a hybrid version of the current large retro-looking sports car later this year and should represent significant progress toward Chevrolet’s goal of becoming a true competitor to Tesla Motors Inc. and other makers of high-end electric vehicles.

The Corvette is about to go electric. “We will have an electrified Corvette next year, so it’s coming very quick,” General Motors President Mark Reuss told CNBC on Monday. An “electrified” Corvette will be available first, with a “fully electric Corvette” to follow, he said.
